Red Velvet cupcakes for Valentines

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, nothing says “I love you!” like delicious red velvet cupcakes for your loved ones. For a special touch, add sweet words and decorative candies! The recipe below is simple enough for the average home cook.

For those having a busy schedule, we have some tips. Make your Valentine’s treats ahead of time and store them in our vacuum storage containers. Under vacuum you will retain the moisture and flavor in your cupcakes. So all you have to do on the V day is decorate them.


  • 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 11/2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 6 tbs unsalted butter preferably at room temperature
  • 1 egg white and 1 egg yolk (separated)
  • ¾ tbs red food coloring
  • ¾ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¾ cup confectioner’s sugar

For frosting, you will need:

  • 3 oz cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1 ½ tbs unsalted butter at room temperature
  • ¾ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ cup confectioner’s sugar


  • Preheat oven to 350F
  • Place cupcake liners in an 8-cup muffin tin and fill halfway 2 muffin cups with water.
  • In a medium bowl, mix dry ingredients: cocoa, flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy with an electric mixer while gradually adding the confectioner’s sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add in the egg white and beat well; then add in the egg yolk, vanilla flavoring and food coloring.
  • To your large bowl, ALTERNATE adding the dry ingredients with the milk (beginning and ending with the milk or beginning with the dry ingredients and ending with them). Beat until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  • Spoon mixture into cupcake liners until each is 1/3 full.
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Oven temperatures may vary.
  • Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting or decorating.

For the frosting:

  • Use an electric mixer on medium speed and beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  • Beat in the vanilla and gradually add confectioner’s sugar until easy to spread.
